Directions and Road Condition

  • Access Road: Gravel road
  • Closest Town: Richmond
  • Directions to campsite: Travel to Richmond along the R56. Drive straight through the town along the main street – Shepstone Street. Cross the Illovo river at the bottom end of the town and 800 metres further on take the tar road on the left signposted – Hella Hella 22. Travel on tar for 14km and then continue on the gravel road down into the valley. Travel on gravel for 8km to the Mkomazi (Umkomaas) River, cross the river and drive 2km up the foot of the pass. The Highover gate is on the left, enter and Reception is 50 metres beyond the gate.

  • Comments: Highover is a private game farm and is a RSA Natural Heritage site (#44). It is home to a number of endangered species and is a birding hot spot. Campsites are on small river plain on the banks of the Mkomazi River with towering cliffs and mountains forming the river valley. The sites are separated by indigenous trees and bush making them private and sheltered. The sites vary in size from those that can accommodate two caravans as well as extra tents, to those that suit two tents only. Impala, bushbuck, ostriches, zebra , the occasional warthog and samango monkey frequent the campsite. Nocturnal animals include genets, porcupines and bush-babies – as well as plenty of bats. Bird life is abundant – including cuckoos, trogons, flycatchers and shrikes.
