Directions and Road Condition

  • Access Road: Gravel road
  • Closest Town: Thohoyandou
  • Directions to campsite: From the south Turn off the R524 towards Thohoyandou. Drive through Thohoyandou to Sibasa and straight on Masisi road to the t-junction indicating Donald Fraser Hospital (left) and Masisi (right). Go right towards Masisi.Continue towards Masisi for another 37 km. Turn off the road towards Gunda /Lambani and follow the signboards to the site for another 1.8 km. From the north Turn off the R525 at Masisi towards the Tshikondeni mine. Do not take the left turn to the mine but continue straight on towards Sibasa/Thohoyandou for another approximate 25km. The site is sign posted off this road to your right. From Punda Maria (Kruger National Park) Driving towards Punda Maria, turn left at the cross road towards Mhinga and Lambani (right goes to Maphophe and Makuleke)Follow the tar road for about 3 km, turn left to cross the Levubu river (trough a gate). Carry on straight (carry on for 4 km and turn right at Lambani/ Gunda road. Follow the road (passing a sign to Dzanwe, left, after about 8 km Lambani turns off left, but carry on straight towards Gunda and Vhurivhuri for about another 10 km after which there is a sign to Golwe that turns off left. Golwe is about 25 km from the tar road to Punda Maria of which about 16 km is dirt road accessible to slow driving 2x4 vehicles. IF YOU NEED ANY DIRECTIONS WHEN YOU ARE ON THE WAY CALL

  • Comments: Golwe campsite is nestled in a beautiful valley under shady vegetation and is home to many unique species of birds, butterflies and orchids. A spring bubbles crystal-clear water in the centre of the campsite and hiking trail lead up to waterfall further up the valley. The site is rural but is more secluded from village life and is an ideal tranquil getaway. Golwe is owned and run by members of the Vhurivhuri community. The area is multifunctional and can also accommodate people who want to have open-air meetings and parties. All proceeds go towards the development of campsite and supporting unemployed people who are willing to help in the campsite. Birding is good in and around the campsite. We have the following specials: African broadbill, P ink- throated twinspot, Scaly-throated Honeyguide and Grey waxbill.
