Directions and Road Condition

  • Access Road: Gravel road
  • Closest Town: Nieuwoudtville
  • Directions to campsite: By tarred road: From CT take N1 then N7 to Vanrhynsdorp. At Vanrhynsdorp, turn off onto R27 to Nieuwoudtville. On reaching Nieuwoudtville, turn R into town, and straight through the main street, out at the other end onto dirt road for: Papkuilsfontein: 22km, farm signed on right, 1km more to main homestead, where you will be met by us and directed to your cottage and the camp site. The other option, coming from Cape Town side, is to look at your map and from Clanwilliam take the R364 to us over the Pakhuis- and Botterkloof Passes. This is a dirt road, but much more beautiful than the tarred R27. Read this carefully, and our advise is to print this out and take with you! From Clanwilliam, take R364 over Pakhuis Pass. You will pass Bushman'skloof Resort some 38km out of Clanwiliam, then the turn-off to Wupperthal and the Englishman's grave, which is 41km out of Clanwilliam. The road is tarred up to this point. Then beware! about 10km after that, you see a Papkuilsfontein turn-off to your left: This is not our turn-off. After 68km from Clanwilliam you reach the farm Doringbos (with a one-car bridge over the Doorn River). Do not take the Moedverloor Road, as this is in a quite bad condition, but continue straight on over Botterkloof pass (this is through the Succulent Karroo) and continue until you reach the Soutpan/ Nieuwoudtville/ Calvinia intersection (100km from Clanwilliam). Turn left there to Nieuwoudtville, 20km on this road, and Papkuilsfontein is signed on your left. For De Lande, carry straight on for 9km more, and signed on your right. Please do not attempt to drive dirt roads after dark when you are from overseas and not accustomed to country roads.especially after rains. Please enquire at Clanwilliam about the condition of roads, And just when you start doubting that you may be wrong, just continue, you cannot go wrong. If you do not go further inland from us, but go back to Cape Town, it is ok to come to us via the tarred roads from Cape Town (N7 and R27) and leave via the gravel R364, as the R364 is more beautiful driving it from us towards Clanwilliam, driving first through the succulent Karroo, over the Botterkloof pass and later the Pakhuis pass and seeing the Cedarberg Mountains far off, and then driving into their ruggedness. Stop at the Englishmen's grave (let us tell the story to you) and later Leipoldt's (a S.A. poet) grave. Distance over dirt road from Clanwilliam to us = 130km Distance on tarred road from Clanwilliam to us = 140km See map on www.papkuilsfontein.com

Comments, Rules and Notes

  • Comments: The campsite, originally meant for our 4x4 visitors, is growing more and more popular with ordinary camping visitors (one does not need a 4x4 to reach it). The 4x4 trail and campsite were developed on the extreme right side of the 6, 000ha property so as to be of no hindrance to our other guests on the farm. This also means that you are completely private when camping at Papkuilsfontein. The camp offers beautiful vistas over the Hantamsberg mountains to the east, and the canyon cliffs to the west. It has a huge lapa and braai area, with low raised sandstone seating around it. Tall taai- and kraaibushes provide shade while we wait for the trees to grow big enough. In the lapa a reed ‘’pergola’’ has been erected for shade. A sonkwas reed hut, built to be reminiscent of the reed dwellings in the area, houses the bathroom (with hot shower) and there is one separate flush toilet. There is no electricity, oil lamps are provided for the bathroom and toilet.
  • Additional Comments: Campsite on a farm
  • Other: Accommodation in stone houses with breakfast & supper included
